Dr. Saunders,

I am prereading Water for Elephants for my incoming freshmen son. It contains several pornographic passages. I am not sure if you are aware of this fact. My son has therefore chosen another book.

Sandy,
I am delighted that you are prereading Water for Elephants and determined that it is too mature for your son. Please have him email me his new selection. We try to provide a list with a wide range of titles to catch the interests of most of the students. Water for Elephants was suggested for the list by a student who reads widely. I read reviews and discussed the book with some others who had read it and then put it on the list. I have since read the book and enjoyed it very much. I agree that it is for more mature readers. Because the book begins with a passage that takes place in a nursing home with a somewhat complex writing style and issues of aging that aren't usually interesting to young students, I expected that any student not ready for the book would switch to another title before reading very far.
The five other students at Gloucester High School who chose Water for Elephants for their summer reading title are in the upper grades.
